1.

S.O.R.A is a 3 step process:

Step 1: A main function of the S.O.R.A process is the completion of a SORA Training class. It is strongly suggested that you identify a training class first. Please visit and register for a S.O.R.A certification class here. To attend this class you need two forms of government issued ID (one with photo), a copy of your 30 Day Temporary Certificate by (Signing up here with the NJSP) and your payment. Once you register for this class you will be sent a confirmation email. Please make sure that you receive this email. If you do not, call our office (908)-389-1400 . On the week of the training class, you will be sent reminder emails. It is at this point we suggest that you complete the next two steps. This is designed for you to maximize your 30 day temporary period.

Step 2: You must to register with the State Police. You must register with the New Jersey State Police.  You will not be able to attend class without registering with the State Police. When you complete your registration with the State Police you must print out two forms; the MorphoTrak Fingerprint Form and the 30 day Temporary Certificate. You need two copies of the 30 Day Temporary Certificate, one copy for your records and bring one copy on the day of class.

Step 3: Complete a fingerprint scan at a MorphoTrak. We recommend that you enroll via their website at https://www.bioapplicant.com/nj/Default.aspx it is also listed on the form. You don't need to have your fingerprints done before attening class but we strongly recommended that you make an appointment as soon as possible. It often takes at least 2-3 weeks to get an appointment. Calling them and providing your information via phone leaves the possibility of a communication error. You MUST show up on time with either a valid drivers license or government-issued ID card. These are the ONLY forms of ID they accept and your paperwork. If you do not show up on time, you may be turned away

2.

Is it possible to work security without this license?

Some companies will hire people without a S.O.R.A license but it comes with liabilities, which most of the time the person being hired is not informed about. The security officer, even thought he/she did not know of the liability could be fined $1,000 and possibly even barred from working security in the future. Some companies have tried to get around this by changing their title, but the person hired is taking on secuirty officer duties still making them liable for the fines and possible banment.

3.

How long is the S.O.R.A license valid for?

The S.O.R.A license is valid for 2 years, at which time, the license will have to be renewed by taking a S.O.R.A Refresher course found here.

4.

Why do different training academies have varying rates for the S.O.R.A classes?

It is our goal to provide the best training the industry has to offer, while keeping prices competitive. The costs will vary from location to location, but so will the course experience. We strive to provide the best training with hands on training backed by 30 years of on the job experience and knowledge to give you the leader edge.

5.

Some companies offer their own S.O.R.A training. what is the difference between them and an independent school?

The companies that are offering their own training usually have an overly inflated cost. Some companies even offer the class for free if you are with them for a period of time, but if you were to leave that company before the time requirement is met you will usually be required to pay the training cost. Independent schools like ours are much cheaper with superior training and offer employment referrals.

6.

How long does the S.O.R.A process take?

The process is quicker than it sounds because New Jersey State Police Registration takes about 7 minutes online (Here)  The class itself is two full days and the fingerprinting is a 2 minute process, you just have to make an appointment.  Once all 3 steps have been completed the State Police will then issue you your SORA card and you should recieve it in the mail within 15 business days.

7.

What if I have a criminal record/history?

Part of the process for getting your SORA certification is a background check. Crimes involving moral turpitude, control substances and any 4th degree crime or greater will prohibit an individual from receiving SORA certification. Questions related to one's criminal history or background checks can only be addressed by the New Jersey State Police. Please submit all inquiries to the following email address: PDU@GW.NJSP.ORG . The NJSP does not do refunds for any reason so if you have an issue in this area the best route would be to contact the NJSP for guidance.
